Law firms across Perth have reported a measurable drop in productivity this week as practitioners become unexpectedly absorbed in the Winter Olympics, with particular attention given to a viral video of a dog running down a ski slope.
The footage – variously described as “uplifting”, “technically impressive” and “CPD-worthy” – has circulated widely across legal workplaces, prompting what one managing partner referred to as “a short-term reallocation of focus”.
“It started with the luge,” said one associate. “Then someone shared the dog video and things really escalated from there.”
IT departments initially flagged a spike in streaming activity, before confirming the traffic was Olympics-related and, more specifically, dog-related.
“We thought it might be a system issue,” an IT manager said. “It turned out to be pure joy.”
Practices have reportedly adapted quickly, incorporating Olympic discussion into meetings and, in at least one instance, delaying a matter “until after the next run”.
Several lawyers have taken a sudden interest in winter sports terminology, confidently referencing “goofy stance”, “flat light” and “the quad” despite no prior exposure to ice or snow.
One partner confirmed that a team huddle was temporarily paused after a colleague announced, “You need to see this dog.”
Observers say the moment marked a turning point, especially when the camera panned to the wide shot, which has widely been described as iconic.
“He just barrelled straight down the slope with such joy and purpose,” said a junior lawyer, still processing. “Even when being chased by event organisers.”
The video has since been incorporated into multiple Teams chats, with staff offering commentary, analysis and what one message described as “life lessons about seizing the moment”.
Firm leaders have issued gentle reminders about deadlines, though these are reportedly being acknowledged after the next replay of Cooper Woods smashing the moguls and hugging his mum.
Despite the disruption, morale is said to be high.
