Legal profession divided as fringe movement demands Lady Justice be recast as Idris Elba

September 2, 2025

Australia’s legal profession is fiercely divided this week after a splinter group of lawyers launched a campaign to permanently reimagine Lady Justice as Idris Elba.

“Frankly, we’ve had enough of the buxom goddess trope,” announced the campaign spokesperson and Luther obsessive.

“Why not make justice suave, sophisticated, and universally beloved? Idris has the gravitas of a High Court judge and the jawline of natural justice. It’s time.”

The campaign, already dubbed #JusticeIsIdris, is gaining momentum as many claim that a masculine, Elba-shaped Lady Justice would finally put an end to undignified office spats about swords and cleavage. Others say it will create new lines of division.

“Justice is meant to be a blindfolded, scantily clad woman,” said one senior silk. “I’m not really sure why that is – probably some French thing – but I am sure it’s not meant to be an icon of modern masculinity holding a martini and smouldering with devastating effect at opposing counsel.”

But not everyone agrees. A marketing consultant engaged by a small firm in Mandurah was supportive of the movement.

“Our data is clear. Lady Justice with cleavage primarily resonates with male barristers over 55. Idris Elba, on the other hand, A/B tests through the roof with literally everyone. Judges, students, even tax lawyers – it’s all positive. He’s a unifying brand proposition.”

Legal publishers – already stymied by the fact gavels are not used in Australia and thus ruling out 99.9 per cent of all legal iStock images – are in full-blown panic.

“We’ve been using the same photo of Lady Justice for 15 years,” admitted one legal editor.

“If we have to commission an Idris Elba Lady Justice for every story, the budget is gone. I mean, I can see the appeal … but who would own the creative rights?”

Even AI is struggling with the new concept. When one firm asked an image generator for “Lady Justice but Idris Elba” the result was described as “half Luther, half superstar DJ, 100 per cent litigiously attractive.”

With the debate raging, traditionalists are digging in their heels.

“Lady Justice has always had a sword, scales and, yes, some distracting Roman assets,” said the Anti-Idris Action Group chairperson.

“If Idris Elba becomes Lady Justice, what’s next? Chris Hemsworth as Attorney General?”

The DOJ has been contacted for comment.
