We are not always happy, nor always sad. As human beings, we experience a wide spectrum of emotions; anxiety and excitement, hope and despair that influence our thoughts, motivations, and decisions. Despite this emotional complexity, we are often expected to carry ourselves responsibly, especially in professional roles. But do we always manage our emotions sensibly? Perhaps not!!  And that is where Amy Jacobson’s The Emotional Intelligence Advantage becomes a valuable guide.

This book helps us understand and embrace our emotions. It teaches us how to align our behaviours with our emotions, rather than suppressing or acting against them. Jacobson introduces a five-step model of emotional intelligence: Own It, Face It, Feel It, Ask It, and Drive It. This practical framework encourages self-awareness, emotional regulation, empathy, and intentional action. Each step is designed to help readers better understand their emotional responses and use them constructively.

A key message of the book is that behind every fancy corporate building and successful brand are – HUMANS – managing tasks, making decisions, activating innovations, and navigating change. It is in this very space that emotional intelligence becomes essential for growth and success. Jacobson also explores the workplace paradox: we often crave novelty yet resist change. Through this lens, she offers a human-centered approach to addressing organisational challenges such as change management, navigating difficult conversations, and fostering team trust and alignment.

What makes this book especially compelling is its authenticity and relatability. It includes real-life examples, neuroscience insights, and moments that may trigger reflection on times we may have lacked emotional intelligence or struggled with communication and leadership skills. As a remedy, she offers strategies and tools that are simple, clear, understandable, and actionable to support personal and professional growth.

The Emotional Intelligence Advantage is an enlightening and practical read. It equips readers with the tools to become more emotionally intelligent, resilient, and effective in today’s fast-paced, ever-changing environment.

This book is not only valuable for leaders and team members within an organisation, but also relevant to individuals seeking personal growth and emotional awareness.
