If Magistrate Alana Padmanabham had a spare 10 minutes

May 15, 2026

Tiffany Cosby interviews Magistrate Padmanabham to find out how she likes to spend her time.

What would an ideal weekend for you look like?

Spending time taking  with my two boys (aged 8 and 5) out to do something fun for all of us like mini-golf or Timezone, having friends over for a homecooked meal with wine and laughs, maybe squeeze in some time to play some music or see some live music and then a lazy Sunday afternoon with all my family, especially my seven nieces and nephews, at my Grandmother’s house.

What’s a skill you’d love to learn?

I have always wanted to learn another language and have never really found the time or patience to commit to it, but there is still time!

Which do you prefer: museums or art galleries, an infinity pool or a sandy beach, Bali or Berlin? Why?

I am not very good at relaxing and doing nothing so it would definitely be the museums and art galleries for me.  I have always loved art and like to paint and draw in my down time so this was an easy choice for me.

Finish this sentence: Sometimes I’m quite …

Wow, this is a dangerous one, it really depends who you ask!  I think across the board people would say I’m quite smiley… I don’t take myself too seriously and like to have a laugh with the people around me, it makes the working day that little bit brighter.

Name one thing on your bucket list

I don’t have a bucket list, but I do have a rule that I say yes to any opportunity to do something terrifying or adventurous or just out of my comfort zone that I know I would like to experience. This has meant that I have done lots of ‘bucket list’ types of things over the years and that I am always going to be pleasantly surprised when the next one comes along.

What is your daily non-negotiable?

Reading a little, or even listening to even a small part of an audiobook or podcast that makes me think about how I can be better to myself and the people in my life and helps me put things into perspective for the day.

Where is a place you’ve always wanted to travel to?

I have always wanted to make it to Carnivale in Rio, the music, food, and atmosphere looks incredible, I’m sure I will make it one day but I might have to wait until the kids are a little older and can be left at home!

Describe your personal ‘brand’ in four words

This was a hard one to answer objectively so I asked around. I was very humbled to hear that I am thought of as compassionate, creative, honest (although some preferred blunt and direct!) and conscientious.

What food will always remind you of your childhood and why?

Although I was born in Perth and my heritage is Indian Tamil, my parents and grandparents were all born in Singapore so my childhood was filled with the most delicious melting pot of different types of Asian food.  The food that always brings me back is my Grandfather’s Mee Goreng (not out of a 2 minute pack!) sadly he has long passed away but my Grandmother makes a pretty close impression of it so I still get to enjoy it often.

If you had a spare 10 minutes right now, how would you use it?

As much as I love my kids, if I had 10 minutes to relax it would be well away from them with a nice glass of red and a Van Morrison record.
