Twenty episodes. One full season. And a whole lot of unlearning along the way.
When we started The Outlaws podcast back in April, we were relative strangers with a shared mission: to have honest conversations about career change, career freedom, and work life balance. What began as an experiment has become a weekly touchpoint for professionals questioning the rules of work and life.
Career change doesn’t require giant leaps
If there’s one theme that dominated Season 1, it’s that transformation doesn’t require dramatic leaps. From Nick Hudson’s push-up challenge that evolved into something bigger, to Katie Sierakowski’s cattle business side hustle, the guests who resonated most were those who started small and stayed curious.
Anne-Laure Le Cunff’s ‘Tiny Experiments’ emerged as the season’s most downloaded Outlawbrary episode, reminding listeners that everything is data. Failed experiment? That’s just information. Unexpected success? More data. This reframe strips away the paralysing fear of making the “wrong” choice.
Work life balance and wellbeing
The season we tackled work life balance and wellbeing head-on, with episodes on burnout recovery, sleep science, and the surprising power of breath work proving hugely popular. Guests like Sally Clark, Alicia Snijders, and Alicia Visser brought both personal experience and scientific backing to topics lawyers often dismiss as “woo woo.”
The message was clear: these aren’t optional extras. They’re fundamental tools for sustainable careers and meaningful lives.
The path to career freedom
Perhaps the most honest revelation across twenty episodes? Discomfort is uncomfortable. The journey to career freedom isn’t always smooth. Whether it was Sulari Gentill describing the feeling that she’d “forgotten to do something” while practising law, or Dave French waiting for the moment when leaving the army “didn’t feel like the worst thing in the world,” guests opened up about sitting in uncertainty.
As Anna Black wisely noted: you can’t read the label when you’re inside the jar. Sometimes you need an outside perspective to see what’s really going on.
What’s next?
Season 2 launches with exciting additions: author Alison Shamir will discuss *Conquer Your Impostor*, international guests will share their stories, and practical workshops will continue in the Facebook group.
But first, we are taking a well-earned break to celebrate our Libra birthdays and the milestone we’ve reached.
To everyone who’s listened, shared, and sent messages: thank you. This experiment is just getting started!
