Tiffany Cosby interviews Kate Wellington to find out how she likes to spend her time.
What would an ideal weekend for you look like?
A rambling bushwalk through wildflower country with the family, and a long lazy dinner with friends. Bliss.
What’s a skill you’d love to learn?
Knitting. It looks so meditative and peaceful. But I’d probably need to learn the skill of patience first. So patience, then knitting …
Which do you prefer: Bali or Berlin? Why?
Berlin, because it’s real. I struggle with the way some tourists in Bali pretend not to see malnourished animals, environmental degradation or struggling locals as they step out of a taxi into a resort. That doesn’t sit right with me.
Finish this sentence: Sometimes I’m quite …
Tired! As many lawyers know, it can be exhausting managing work expectations, family commitments, friends, admin, housework … Too often I put my own health and wellbeing last and end up exhausted.
Name one thing on your bucket list
I would love to learn acoustic guitar. My friend recently learned the electric guitar and played his first gig live on stage. Never too old to be a rock star!
What is your daily non-negotiable?
Work. Gosh that’s terrible … Coffee? Not much better.
Where is a place you’ve always wanted to travel to?
I’ve always wanted to go to Christmas Island, off the coast of WA, but I’m absolutely terrified of robber crabs. If you haven’t heard of robber crabs, google them, but be prepared – they’re straight from your nightmares. Maybe one day I’ll put on my big girl pants and make the trip.
Describe your personal ‘brand’ in four words
One of the managers I work with calls me “Cyclone Kate”. So that’s probably my personal brand in two words.
What food will always remind you of your childhood and why?
Whiting. Freshly caught from the beach at Peron Peninsula in Shark Bay. I feel so lucky to have grown up in WA.
If you had a spare 10 minutes right now, how would you use it?
I would give my daughter a very big hug. As many working parents know, you’re always running, running, running to the next thing. If we had 10 minutes without running, we’d have a very big hug.
