Why sleep matters more than billable hours

September 23, 2025

In law, long hours have always been worn like a badge of honour. Late nights at the office, early starts to prep for court, weekend catch-ups – it’s almost part of the uniform.

But here’s the uncomfortable truth: lack of sleep is making us sick.

On the latest Outlaws Podcast, we spoke with clinical psychologist Alicia Visser about sleep health. She was clear: sleep isn’t optional, and it’s not something you “earn” once you’ve worked hard enough.  It’s a biological need. Without it, our memory, focus, decision-making and even our immune systems take a hit.

For a profession that demands sharp judgement, clarity under pressure, and high performance, the science is blunt: the less we sleep, the worse we practice law.

And no, catching up on the weekend doesn’t fix it. Consistent, good-quality rest is the only way.

So if you needed permission to leave the office on time tonight, this is it. Because the most productive, most professional thing you can do for your clients – and yourself – is to sleep.
