Brief joins forces with Outlaws podcast to shake up conversations about law and life

September 11, 2025

Brief is excited to announce a new collaboration with the Outlaws podcast, hosted by award-winning lawyers and educators Shayla Strapps and Kate Offer.

Shayla and Kate bring a rare mix of experience, humour and honesty to their work. Both have enjoyed celebrated legal careers – Shayla as a social justice litigation lawyer and CEO, and Kate as a nationally recognised law teacher and now academic at Curtin Law School. But neither was satisfied with the traditional definition of success.

Instead, they chose to reimagine their paths: Shayla now coaches and consults to help lawyers and professionals build careers that “feel good on the inside – not just the outside,” while Kate continues to mentor students and colleagues, showing that you can thrive in law without following a rigid script.

Outlaws podcast hosts Shayla Strapps and Kate Offer.

Together, they launched the Outlaws podcast – a space where candid conversations about fulfilment, career shifts and life design challenge the status quo of the profession. With wit and authenticity, they share insights that resonate with lawyers and professionals navigating similar questions.

The new partnership with Brief will see their conversations reach an even wider audience. Readers will be able to access podcast episodes directly through Brief’s website, alongside original collaborative content that expands on the themes explored in the show.

“The Outlaws spirit aligns perfectly with Brief’s mission to reflect the realities of the profession and spotlight diverse voices,” said Brief Managing Editor Claire Chaffey. “We’re excited to work with Shayla and Kate to bring more humour, humanity and honesty into legal storytelling.”

For Shayla and Kate, the collaboration represents an opportunity to extend their message: that success in law doesn’t have to mean burnout or conformity. It can mean carving out a career – and a life – that honours your values, your energy and your joy.

“Outlaws is about starting conversations that matter – the kind you won’t always hear in the courtroom or the boardroom. Partnering with Brief means we can share those stories with an even wider audience,” said Shayla and Kate.

When they’re not disrupting conventional wisdom about legal careers, you’ll find Shayla driving her bright cherry red 1962 Mini (documented on Instagram @mylittleredmini), studying French (preferably while in France), or enjoying long coffees with friends – simple pleasures that her previous life left little time for. Kate balances her return to academia with her role as a marriage celebrant and walking the trails of Europe whenever possible.

The Outlaws podcast proves that sometimes the boldest move isn’t leaving the law behind, but finding new ways to make it your own. You can explore all episodes here in our Legal Lifestyle section, or find the podcasts on your favourite platform.
